Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Auburn

April 13, 2016

The weather is finally warming up and soon you may have to change over to your air conditioner. Along with scheduling your annual air conditioner service with the pros at Forster Heating, there are some other things you can do to remain comfortable and save money this month.

During the transformation season in Auburn, those far too few spring temps, you likely use ceiling fans to keep cozy. Did you know that using your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner may not only keep you more comfortable during the warmer days, but also save you on energy costs? In order to do that you have to ensure you’re utilizing ceiling fans and your air conditioning properly. Here’s a few things to keep in mind:

Raise Your Thermostat

This is where the cost savings can have the chance to come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your bills. Raising your thermostat by a few degrees, in addition to using your ceiling fan, shouldn’t change your comfort level very much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lowering the period of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.

Adjust Air Direction

Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to adjust depending on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to be sure the air is blowing down. You can stand below the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, switch the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually cool your air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature on the thermostat.

Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There

Treat your ceiling fan like they are lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to take in the wind chill that a fan provides you’re wasting energy by running your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
