When winter hits and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, the majority of them can be tracked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not handled, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.
Furnace Age
The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself a bit of time to view and weigh all of your options.
Increased Gas or Electric Bills
Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.
More Frequent Furnace Repairs
The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system might be a better option.
Strange Noises
Have you heard any odd noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.
A Dry or Dusty Home
Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
If any of these red flags sound like what you are feeling with your furnace, it might be time to start researching a new system.
